The Tam O'Shanter Inn is one of Los Angeles' oldest restaurants. Established in 1922, it serves hearty pub fare with a touch of Scottish flair, and is known for its prime rib and Yorkshire pudding. It is located in Atwater Village at 2980 Los Feliz Boulevard at the corner of Boyce Avenue. Free valet parking. We spent the day at the Walt Disney Studios and had made dinner reservations at the restaurant after our tour. It's only a 15-minute dive away. The exterior is very cottage like and reminiscent of Snow White. We still waited 20 minutes with reservations. Walt Disney, Tam O'Shanter founder Lawrence Frank, and designer Harry Oliver at the Tam' O'Shanter Inn, 1960. We had the prime rib and Yorkshire pudding. The meal was delicious. If you are a Disney fan, I would recommend this restaurant. You can request to sit at Walt's table and if you're lucky, it will be available. Walt Disney's favorite table #31, is located next to the fireplace in the main dining room.
The following recipe is from the Walt Disney archives. I personally had a delicious bowl of Walt's favorite chili during my visit to the Walt Disney Studios, Burbank. Now you can make it in your own kitchen at home. Ingredients Chili 2 lbs. coarse ground beef 2 onions, sliced 2 cloves garlic 1⁄2 cup oil 1 cup chopped celery 1 tsp. chili powder (depending on taste) 1 tsp. paprika 1 tsp. dry mustard 1 large can solid pack tomatoes 2 lbs. dry pink beans Salt For Extra Zest Add a pinch of the following spices: 1 little yellow Mexican chili pepper Coriander seeds Turmeric Chili seeds Cumin seeds Fennel seeds Cloves Cinnamon Dry ginger Preparation
Soak beans overnight in cold water. Drain, add water to cover (2 inches over beans), and simmer with onions until tender (about 4 hours). Meanwhile, prepare sauce by browning meat and minced garlic in oil. Add remaining ingredients, and simmer for 1 hour. When beans are tender, add sauce to beans and simmer for 1⁄2 hour. Serves 6 to 8. The story of the the Little Red Wagon is not widely known. The restaurant was actually the Plaza Inn. On opening day, Walt's main restaurant on Main Street was the Red Wagon. It was in operation for 10 years and closed 1964. Later after a remodel, it was opened in 1968 under the name Plaza Inn. Little Red Wagon sits at the east end of Main Street near the Plaza Inn, serving corn dogs, chips, and soda. No seating. It is tribute to the original restaurant. The Plaza Inn is my family's favorite Disneyland restaurant. Famous for it's broasted chicken, green beans and mashed potatoes we always eat at the Plaza Inn. On July 17, 2020 the Plaza Inn will celebrate its 55th anniversary. Formerly known as the “Red Wagon Inn” in 1955, it later became the Plaza Inn in 1965. Walt Disney would close down the restaurant to invite special guests to dine with him and Lillian. The Victorian decor includes a stained-glass Tiffany styled ceiling and both the marble foyer and gingerbread woodwork came from an actual Victorian home. You can also make reservations for the Minnie and Friends character breakfast. Dine with Minnie and take photos with several other featured characters including Daisy Duck, Chip and Dale, Fairy Godmother and the White Rabbit. *please note characters can change from season to season so call ahead to find out which characters will be at your breakfast.
